Colorado Provençal: the French Far West
The Colorado Provençal is an exceptional site. Ideal for hiking. This site was formed by former ochre quarries. Today this Colorado offers magnificent colours ranging from pale yellow to bright red.
Where is it?
The Colorado Provençal is located in the commune of Rustrel in the Vaucluse and Provence Alpes Côtes d'Azur region.
We owe this site to man and nature. For a long time, ochre deposits were exploited as pigments. It is because of its colours and reliefs that the site has been called "Provencal Colorado".
A former ochre quarry, this clay pigment was extracted for more than a century to make a colouring agent. Men used to extract it using shovels and picks in the open air. Since then, this landscape has been in constant evolution and offers us a breathtaking site.
In this photo we can see a part of the Provencal Colorado with shades of yellow, orange and red rocks, surrounded by different trees and shrubs.
