Layon hillside: the start of the Moelleux of Val de Loire
The Layon hillside is today the most widespread terroir in Anjou. This vineyard covers an area of about 1,400 hectares southwest of Angers, including 300 hectares for the communal appellations.
Where is it located?
The AOC Côteaux du Layon vineyard is located on the south-eastern part of the Armorican Massif.
The rows of vines are planted in the direction of the slope or perpendicularly on terraces. Moreover, the soils are stony with a dominant schist, siliceous or clayey.
The history :
The history of the wines of the Layon began in the 7th century with the creation of a vineyard around the Château de Chalones/Loire. The Coteaux du Layon are nowadays better known for the sweet white wine, for 15 centuries now. The winemakers leave the grapes on the vine until they finish ripening, which means that harvesting begins later than anywhere else in the Loire Valley.
