Lac de Gaube: The lovers of the lake

Lac de Gaube is a French P yrenean lake , with an area of 19 hectares, two kilometers of shoreline and a depth of 40 meters.

Where it is?

Located 1 725 meters above sea level, at the foot of Vignemale in the Cauterets valley in the Hautes-Pyrénées, the lake is accessible in an hour's walk or by chairlift from the Pont d'Espagne car park.

Geographical particularity

Once at the lake, you can fish for brown trout or go on wonderful hikes.

The story :

In the Romantic era, the Gaube Lake was one of the favorite spots and many English come discover during their trip s s. But in 1832, a tragic event occurred there. Indeed, a couple of languages, Pattison, who venai ent t marry, borrowed a boat to go around the lake. The young woman got in first and her husband, pushing the boat from the shore, tried to jump into it. Unfortunately , he did not succeed and he dived into the water. The young woman, wanting to get out her drowning husband, lost her balance and in turn fell into the lake. They disappeared tou s two in the deep dark.
