Cap Ferret: The iron tip

Cap Ferret is a strip of the coast of about twenty kilometers separating the Atlantic Ocean and the Arcachon Basin.

Where it is

Situated in Gironde 40 kilometers west of Bordeaux, this peninsula enjoys an exceptional location close to the ocean, Arcachon Basin and the forest of Landes de Gascogne.

Geographical particularity

Thanks to its geographical location, Cap Ferret offers on one side, landscapes of the Arcachon basin and on the other side the waves and the immensity of the Côte d'Argent. You can also see the Banc d'Arguin and the Pila Dune at the tip.

The story

The Cap Ferret peninsula owes its name to the expression “Lou Cap Herré”, which in Gascon means “The iron tip”. Why this name? Because we can see the color of rust streaks on the beach when the water in the basin flows back to the ocean.
